What is Querical?

Querical is the place where I gather my thoughts about our profession. It is an ode to what we might call an inquisitive method of fundraising: approaching donors with curiosity and empathy to reveal those things about them that help us find ways in which we can partner to materialize our shared vision of the world.

Who am I?

My name is Maarten Bout. Since I’m originally from the Netherlands, and originally a performing artist, that I now work in philanthropy and fundraising may seem like a hard left turn. It is way more logical than that. My entire career I’ve dedicated my energy to resource development of one kind or another. Grants, corporate sponsorships, and especially giving by individuals have been part of my focus for a couple decades now. It is a joy and privilege to talk with people about those values, ideas, and vision they hold dearest in this life. Right now, I lead the Leadership, Major and Transformational Giving Teams (LMTGT) at United Way of Central Indiana, a team of talented professionals who work with donors all over the Central Indiana region to help our neighbors who live close to or in poverty.
